Welcome to Battle Hill School!
Battle Hill 1st Annual Race to Read Contest

Battle Hill 1st Annual Race to Read Contest title

Race to Read Guidelines

This contest is open to all students of Battle Hill entering kindergarten through those entering grade 4.  I will be setting up fun activities and places your child can log in the books that they have read.
This will be  within a summer google classroom that all of your children will be invited to. It does NOT matter if your child is entered in any summer programs, are away on a tropical island or simply relaxing at home….all children can join for fun, log in their books, come on for poster contests, read a louds and book talks. They can join sometimes, all the time or simply to log in their book titles!!
It is all for fun and a chance to win some great prizes!!
One class per grade level will be winning something as well as 5-7 individual students for overall reading. Also, there will be winners for our costume book contests, poster contests and other fun activities. Picture books will be 2 points, mid chapter books 3-4 and chapter books 4-6. I am attaching a list of books your child may like to read. All of these books will be available at Barnes and Noble and I will also have some if you need to borrow them. The summer reading can be ANY book your child would like to read….it's all about the imagination not the title or level of the book. However, I will be posting a list of book suggestions in case you are not too sure what is great, new and available out there.
Logs will be counted and finalized one week before school begins in September so this gives you TONS of time to read, read and read!!
I will post fun activities and google meet times in advance. Start your engines everyone……...have fun and  please always email me with any questions you may have!! Let's race to the finish with some amazing stories
For questions please contact Mrs. Cassidy-Turner at

Ahhhh grade 3. The year you not only see your children reading anything and everything, but also talking and writing about what they have read. It is one of my favorite years to watch them grow, read and learn. Remember though-- looking at books below grade or reading level is NEVER detrimental. Reading is reading and sometimes--early in grade 3, chapter books do not have the allure for those that still enjoy embracing the pictures. No worries-- this is normal. Also, for those completely enamoured by chapter books--some off the grade 4 list may work as well. Here are some great options for your child- remember-these are only suggestions.
The Candy Shop War- Brandon Mull
Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave- Jessica Hische
The One and Only Ivan- Katherine Applegate
The Wild Robot- Peter Brown
James and the Giant Peach- Roald Dahl
